Skoda Elroq Tops UK EV Ranking as Range and Charging Technology Advance

Editor••3 min read

The Skoda Elroq has been ranked as the leading electric car on sale in the UK in a new assessment of the market, ahead of the BMW iX3, Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, Renault 5 and Porsche Taycan. The shortlist highlights how competition is increasingly being shaped by efficiency, charging performance, practicality and affordability rather than simply battery range.

Electric vehicles now account for almost 30% of the UK new-car market, according to the assessment. Improvements in battery technology, public charging infrastructure and energy efficiency have helped make EVs more usable, while lower production costs and the UK government’s Electric Car Grant (ECG) are supporting lower purchase prices for qualifying models.

Elroq combines practicality, efficiency and value

The Skoda Elroq takes first place for its broad mix of interior space, everyday usability and value. The compact electric SUV has a listed starting price of £33,970 and an official WLTP range of up to 372 miles, depending on version.

Skoda’s model is positioned below the larger Enyaq and brings the brand’s electric SUV formula into a smaller and less expensive package. Its cabin and boot are key strengths: the boot includes an underfloor compartment for charging cables, a storage net and a multi-height parcel shelf. Rear accommodation is also described as generous for the class.

Several Elroq versions qualify for the £1500 ECG, including the 85 SE L, which has a stated WLTP range of 355 miles. In road testing, the Elroq returned an everyday efficiency figure of 4.8mpkWh. Its ride quality and easy-to-use interior controls were also highlighted, although the model is not presented as the most engaging option for enthusiastic driving and adaptive suspension is limited to more expensive versions.

BMW iX3 sets a new benchmark for range and charging

The BMW iX3 ranks second, with the evaluation identifying it as a standout choice for long-distance capability, energy efficiency and ultra-rapid charging. The electric SUV starts at £60,655 and has an official range of up to 500 miles, the highest figure among the leading five models.

BMW developed the iX3 on its Neue Klasse EV platform, a programme into which the company has invested billions. The model can charge at up to 400kW when connected to a compatible rapid charger, and BMW’s quoted 10-80% charging time is 21 minutes. During testing, the iX3 reached its stated 400kW peak and recorded 4.0mpkWh.

Despite weighing close to 2.3 tonnes, the iX3 is credited with controlled handling and precise steering. However, its passive suspension can feel firm on poorer roads. The digital-first cabin is another potential dividing line: its technology is described as advanced, but buyers who favour physical buttons may find the interface less appealing.

Performance and affordability broaden the top five

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N takes third place as the performance-focused entry. Priced from £65,800, the dual-motor electric crossover produces 641bhp and 549lb ft of torque. In road testing, it reached 60mph in 3.5 seconds and 100mph in 7.8 seconds. Its official WLTP range is up to 278 miles, while the tested range was 230 miles. The trade-off for its strong performance is comparatively modest efficiency, as well as substantial size and a 2.2-tonne weight.

In fourth position, the Renault 5 represents the more affordable end of the EV market. It starts at £21,495 and has an official range of up to 248 miles, with a tested range of 260 miles. The model is recognised for offering stylish, accessible electric motoring.

The Porsche Taycan completes the top five. Starting at £88,200, the electric sports saloon pairs a WLTP range of up to 421 miles with a tested range of 360 miles. Its role in the ranking underlines that EV competition now extends from lower-cost superminis to long-range SUVs and high-performance premium models.
