BMW Plant Munich Builds One-Millionth M Vehicle as Electric M3 Plans Advance

Editor••3 min read

BMW M has marked the production of its one-millionth vehicle with a BMW M3 built at BMW Group Plant Munich. The milestone arrives as the German manufacturer prepares the site for an all-electric future, including production of the first fully-electric BMW M3.

Milestone M3 links BMW M’s past and future

The one-millionth BMW M vehicle is a BMW M3 finished in BMW Individual Fire Orange III. At a ceremony in Munich, Plant Munich head Peter Weber presented the car to Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH.

The event carries particular significance for the M division because the M3 has been central to its identity for four decades. BMW said the milestone demonstrates continued customer demand for its high-performance models, which are intended to combine road and track capability with everyday usability.

“The one-millionth BMW M vehicle shows that these values are still very much appreciated by our customers, 40 years after the market launch of the first BMW M3,” van Meel said. He added that BMW M plans to expand its high-performance range using BMW M Neue Klasse technology, including fully electric models.

Plant Munich has assembled the current-generation BMW M3 since 2020. According to BMW, that production history has created a strong connection between the model and employees at the company’s main plant.

Electric BMW M3 will be built exclusively in Munich

BMW has confirmed that Plant Munich will manufacture the first fully-electric BMW M3. The company describes the model as the first high-performance vehicle to use BMW M Neue Klasse technology.

The electric M3 is to be produced exclusively at the Munich site, reinforcing the plant’s role in BMW’s global manufacturing network. It will be the second Neue Klasse model made there, following the fully-electric BMW i3.

BMW has not disclosed technical specifications, timing for series production, or performance figures for the electric M3 in this announcement. However, the company is positioning the car as an important step in bringing its M performance brand into the Neue Klasse era.

For Munich, the decision also represents a commitment to BMW’s historic home base. The plant has been in operation for more than 100 years and remains strategically important as the group shifts its manufacturing footprint towards battery-electric vehicles.

€650 million transformation targets all-electric output from 2027

BMW Group Plant Munich is being converted to build only fully-electric vehicles from 2027 onwards. The transformation has been carried out while existing vehicle production continues at the site.

BMW is investing around €650 million in the conversion. About one-third of the plant area has been redeveloped for a new body shop, vehicle assembly facilities and logistics areas. BMW said the upgraded plant will also use modern production systems, digitalisation and closer coordination with development teams and suppliers.

The programme reflects the operational challenge facing established automotive factories: adapting a long-running, centrally located combustion-era site to manufacture electric vehicles efficiently without abandoning its existing industrial base.

BMW Group reported global passenger-vehicle sales of 2.46 million units in 2025 across its BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brands. As the company expands electric-vehicle production, Munich is set to become one of its most visible examples of a legacy factory reshaped for battery-electric models — with the electric BMW M3 positioned as a key product in that transition.
