Chinese premium electric-vehicle brand Avatr plans to begin Australian deliveries of its first model, the Avatr S07L electric SUV, in early 2027. The Changan Group-backed brand expects to open local pre-orders by the end of 2026, marking another planned entry into Australia’s increasingly competitive EV market.
Premium EV brand prepares Australian entry
Avatr is part of the Changan Group and was established in 2018 through a joint venture involving automaker Changan, battery producer CATL and technology company Huawei. The company is headquartered in Chongqing, China, and has design and engineering operations in Shanghai and Munich.
The Australian launch programme is already under way. The SUV was spotted testing in New South Wales in July, ahead of the brand’s planned market arrival. Avatr says the S07L will combine an 800V electrical architecture, rapid-charging capability and a Meridian audio system.
Bryan Guan, general manager of Changan Group Australia, said the company sees Australia as an important market for the new brand.
“AVATR was created around a simple belief that the future of luxury should be intelligent, but it should also be emotional,” Guan said. “Australia is an important market for AVATR. Australian customers are sophisticated, discerning and increasingly open to brands that challenge traditional automotive conventions.”
He described the S07L as the brand’s first expression of its “Emotive Luxury” positioning, which is intended to combine design, technology, performance and customer experience.
CATL LFP battery and 800V charging technology
Details of Australian specifications, equipment grades and pricing have not yet been confirmed. However, the electric version sold in China uses an 89.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by CATL.
The pack is identified as CATL’s Shenxing battery, which the company says can charge from 30% to 80% in 10 minutes. It is one of the key technical elements expected to underpin the vehicle’s rapid-charging credentials, although Avatr has not confirmed Australian charging performance or the charging infrastructure conditions under which its local figures would apply.
In China, the electric SUV is quoted with up to 650 km of CLTC driving range. The report indicated that this could be closer to 500 km when measured on the WLTP cycle more commonly used in Australia, but an official Australian WLTP figure has not been released.
The model is available in China with rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive powertrains. Avatr says the quickest versions can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in as little as 3.7 seconds and have a top speed of 200 km/h. Whether both drivetrain configurations will be offered in Australia remains to be announced.
Long-wheelbase SUV targets premium EV buyers
Avatr’s 07 is already sold in right-hand-drive markets including Thailand and Singapore in standard-wheelbase form. The long-wheelbase 07L variant was first teased on May 8, 2026, and has been produced in China since earlier this year.
The planned Australian arrival gives Changan Group another route into a market attracting a growing number of Chinese EV manufacturers and brands. For Avatr, the strategy is more premium-focused than volume-led, with its launch messaging placing emphasis on luxury, digital technology, battery capability and performance.
More information on the Australian S07L range, including final specifications, variants, pricing and delivery timing, is expected closer to the launch.
