An EV’s advertised range is a standardized test result, not a promise that every driver will reproduce the same number on every trip. Real-world range changes because energy consumption changes.
The biggest variables
- Speed: aerodynamic resistance rises rapidly as speed increases.
- Temperature: very cold or very hot conditions can increase energy demand.
- Cabin heating and cooling: climate systems use energy that could otherwise propel the vehicle.
- Elevation: climbing requires energy, although regenerative braking can recover part of it on descents.
- Tires and pressure: rolling resistance affects efficiency.
- Load and driving style: repeated hard acceleration and extra weight can increase consumption.
A better way to think about range
Rather than asking only how many miles or kilometers an EV can travel, compare battery capacity, efficiency and charging performance. For long-distance driving, a vehicle that charges quickly and consistently may be more convenient than one with a slightly larger nominal range.
