BYD has launched the Sealion 6 DM-i, a mid-size plug-in hybrid crossover, in South Korea. The model combines an 18.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate Blade battery with BYD’s DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligence) system and is set to compete with hybrid offerings from Hyundai Motor and Kia.
Four-mode hybrid system
According to The Korea Herald, the Sealion 6 DM-i can automatically select among four operating modes based on vehicle speed, battery charge and road conditions. These are electric driving, series hybrid operation, direct engine drive and parallel hybrid operation.
The system is designed to use electric propulsion when conditions allow, while combining the engine and electric motor in other situations. The vehicle’s certified all-electric range is 70 km.
Range, consumption and charging
BYD Korea says the crossover can travel more than 1,000 km with a fully charged battery and a full fuel tank. That figure represents the vehicle’s combined driving capability rather than its electric-only range.
Official combined fuel consumption is listed at 15.2 km per liter. In electric mode, the Sealion 6 DM-i is rated at 4.2 km per kWh.
The plug-in hybrid supports 18 kW DC fast charging. BYD states that charging the battery from 30% to 80% takes approximately 30 minutes.
Dimensions and equipment
The Sealion 6 DM-i measures 4,775 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width and 1,670 mm in height. Its dimensions place it between the Hyundai Tucson and Hyundai Santa Fe in the South Korean market.
Inside, the crossover has a 15.6-inch central touchscreen with localized Kakao Map navigation. Standard equipment includes power adjustment, heating and ventilation for the front seats. The rear seats add heating and recline adjustment, while a panoramic glass roof is also available.
South Korean pricing
BYD has priced the Sealion 6 DM-i at 37.5 million won in South Korea, equivalent to about $27,250. The Hyundai Tucson Hybrid is listed in the country at between 33.18 million and 40.82 million won before tax benefits are applied.
The launch gives BYD another entry point into South Korea’s growing hybrid-vehicle market, where the company will face established domestic manufacturers and their existing electrified SUV lineups.
